Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polarization. Division. Hate. Many Americans wonder how our politics became dysfunctional—and what it will take to fix it. Historian Michael Santos takes readers on a journey to the heart of the American nation and the values that have allowed us to overcome previous challenges, sometimes in spite of ourselves. He remembers the heroes and heroines who challenged us to be better versions of ourselves. Santos addresses a series of interrelated questions: What are the legacies of this country, handed down to us by the Founders? What have previous generations done to keep the principles upon which the Republic rests alive and to advance their implications for more and more people? Where were the fault lines that put the American experiment at risk, and how have we overcome them? And when we have failed to overcome them, what possible lessons are there for an understanding of what America is and can become? By offering these historical perspectives, Santos helps readers overcome the current crisis in faith about the present challenges and future prospects for the American experiment.

Rediscovering America answers that question, and it’s like no other history you have ever read. More than an account of people, dates, and events, this story is about the hidden hand of a purposeful historical development where the main actors are colorful characters, participating in an American drama of little known but remarkable events where overcoming incredible odds of failure is more unbelievable and engaging than fiction. And while each chapter is a stand-alone tale—some quite wild—about what is behind each of the American holidays, the page- and chapter-turning appeal of Rediscovering America is in the narratives that link the holiday stories together, revealing an account of progress and redemption in America covering over four hundred years—never before told in a concise and readable book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we start with the wrong question, no matter how good an answer we get, it won’t give us the results we want. Rather than joining the throngs who are asking, When will this economic crisis be over? Jim Wallis says the right question to ask is How will this crisis change us? The worst thing we can do now, Wallis tells us, is to go back to normal. Normal is what got us into this situation. We need a new normal, and this economic crisis is an invitation to discover what that means. Some of the principles Wallis unpacks for our new normal are . . . • Spending money we don’t have for things we don’t need is a bad foundation for an economy or a family. • It’s time to stop keeping up with the Joneses and start making sure the Joneses are okay. • The values of commercials and billboards are not the things we want to teach our children. • Care for the poor is not just a moral duty but is critical for the common good. • A healthy society is a balanced society in which markets, the government, and our communities all play a role. • The operating principle of God’s economy says that there is enough if we share it. • And much, much more . . . In the pages of this book, Wallis provides us with a moral compass for this new economy—one that will guide us on Wall Street, Main Street, and Your Street. Embracing a New Economy Getting back to "the way things were" is not an option. It is time we take our economic uncertainty and use it to find some moral clarity. Too often we have been ruled by the maxims that greed is good, it’s all about me, and I want it now. Those can be challenged only with some of our oldest and best values—enough is enough, we are in it together, and thinking not just for tomorrow but for future generations. Jim Wallis shows that the solution to our problems will be found only as individuals, families, friends, churches, mosques, synagogues, and entire communities wrestle with the question of values together.

Book excerpt: This book, widely regarded as groundbreaking since its publication over thirty-five years ago, sheds light on the more radical and prophetic roots of American evangelicalism and has challenged countless readers to rethink their evangelical heritage. It argues that nineteenth-century American evangelicals held a more mature vision of the faith, for they engaged demanding justice, peace, and social issues--a vision that was betrayed and distorted by twentieth-century neo-evangelicals. The book helps readers understand that the broader origins of American evangelicalism include the social justice concerns of today's church. Featuring new historic photos and illustrations, this edition includes new introductory and concluding chapters and incorporates relevant updates. The previous edition was published as Discovering an Evangelical Heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Peter Brathwaite on an extraordinary journey through representations of Black subjects in Western art, from medieval Europe through the present day. “These mirror images with their uncanny resemblances traverse space and time, spotlighting the black lives that have been silenced by the canon of western art, while also inviting us to interrogate the present.” —Times (UK) Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Peter Brathwaite has thoughtfully researched and reimagined more than one hundred artworks featuring portraits of Black sitters—all posted to social media with the caption “Rediscovering #blackportraiture through #gettymuseumchallenge.” Rediscovering Black Portraiture collects more than fifty of Brathwaite’s most intriguing re-creations. Introduced by the author and framed by contributions from experts in art history and visual culture, this fascinating book offers a nuanced look at the complexities and challenges of building identity within the African diaspora and how such forces have informed Black portraits over time. Artworks featured include The Adoration of the Magi by Georges Trubert, Portrait of an Unknown Man by Jan Mostaert, Rice n Peas by Sonia Boyce, Barack Obama by Kehinde Wiley, and many more. This volume also invites readers behind the scenes, offering a glimpse of the elegant artifice of Brathwaite’s props, setup, and process. An urgent and compelling exploration of embodiment, representation, and agency, Rediscovering Black Portraiture serves to remind us that Black subjects have been portrayed in art for nearly a millennium and that their stories demand to be told. An exhibition of Brathwaite’s re-creations is on view at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery in Bristol, UK from April 14 to July 23, 2023.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiment with socialism in the Soviet Union was based on Marxist economic theory, which denied the universal nature of economic law. The economy became a blank slate, without markets, prices, even without money - for a time. Government had to rediscover fire - learning basics of economics over again. This historical laboratory of social science should be exploited for the lessons in basic economics that it offers. Many view Lenin as a dictator who exploited the peoples of the Soviet Union, betraying the hopes and dreams of socialism for his own benefit. Yet, Lenin wrote hundreds of books on Marxist theory, and the policies he enacted were those he promised. Despite the wealth of information available on the Soviet experiment, few have closely analyzed why it produced results different from those intended and what these lessons might mean for market economies. Based on Marxist economic theory, which denied the universality of economic laws, the Soviet Union wiped out the market and, with it, the basis for all economic knowledge. In this vacuum of economic information, planners had neither market theory nor prices to guide them. The socialist experiment was truly an experiment in eliminating the market. The Bolsheviks enacted policies based on Marxist hypotheses: nationalizing businesses and banks, setting wages according to the labor theory of value, eliminating interest and capital markets, and planning full employment. When each Marxist policy failed, the state reorganized to better implement it, tried modified versions, and only pulled back as a last resort. In this book, Guinevere Nell explores the theory and experience of the socialist experiment. In each chapter, she considers one theory put forth by socialists. She explores the ways in which the Soviet planners implemented this theory, recognized that their policies were not producing the desired results, and tried to implement reforms to combat the failures. In each chapter, she extracts certain lessons from the experience of the planners. The lessons capture the dynamic nature of the economy, something that is commonly overlooked by mainstream economists and policymakers although it has been a focus of the Austrian school of economics. Insights from the debate between socialists and Austrian economists are introduced during the discussion of the lessons at the end of each chapter. The lessons suggest that due the dynamic nature of the market, the Soviet Union could never surpass the West in economic growth. Each chapter concludes with policy examples and discussion of how the lesson can inform policies that market economies are considering. All policy examples are from current U.S. policy debate. The last lesson ties together the thrust of many disparate threads throughout the book. It makes the case that the socialist arguments were aimed at the wrong target, which is why the prescription of planning led to the opposite of what was intended. The conclusion of the book summarizes the recurring themes of reform. These lessons have relevance for all economies and for both economists and the policy-minded citizen. For example, the socialist elimination of competition provides insight into the neoclassical framework and sheds light on our common understanding of how 'competitive' certain industries are. The book is intended for the educated layperson, but should also be accessible and relevant to college students and professional economists. The book is written in plain language, with all economic terms defined.

Boyd, Pennsylvania State Representative). “The Seed of a Nation is a thoroughly researched and fascinating account of William Penn’s efforts to establish a ‘Holy Experiment’ in Pennsylvania—a vision of governance grounded in faith and operating on the principles of tolerance and respect for all” (Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf). It was this “Holy Experiment,” set out in Penn’s Charter of Privileges, that provided the framework for the United States Government, including the essential underlying mandate to provide freedom for all people. So brilliant was William Penn’s legacy that Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Declaration of Independence, called him, “the greatest lawgiver the world has produced.” This fascinating work looks at the life and impact of William Penn—an impact that still echoes today.
