Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two questions are braided together in Luke’s Gospel. Who is Jesus, and what does it mean to be his student and apprentice? The church has spent much of its intellectual energies on the first question, but not so much on the second. We are precise in our Christology and vague in our Discipleology (my new word!). Of the four biographies that open the New Testament, Luke is perhaps the best equipped to answer the question of what it means to follow Jesus along with others, and what we can expect in the process. Luke’s Gospel is dense with story after story about Jesus’s stumbling, goofy, persistent disciples. And his second volume—Acts—continues the tale. There is a deep continuity, as Luke teaches, between Jesus’s original disciples and the ones who later declared their allegiance to him after his resurrection. We walk in the footsteps of pioneers in this new way of living with a Jesus who is always near but just beyond sight. The aim of this book is to plunder the fruits of New Testament scholarship, especially the tools of rhetorical and narrative criticism, to highlight what an incredible adventure came with the call to follow me.

Book excerpt: Jesus' resurrection is the singular event upon which the truth of Christianity rises or falls. This exploration of the resurrection begins with a survey the earliest mentions in the Old Testament through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Then it examines each of the four gospels to determine as precisely as possible what took place that first Easter morning. It investigates five alternate theories of Jesus' resurrection and demonstrates why none deals adequately with the New Testament evidence. It outlines the strong facts that underlie our belief in Christ's physical resurrection from the dead and explores the theological and practical implications that flow from it. Finally, the book considers what the New Testament teaches about our own resurrection on the Last Day. This examination of the resurrection, with its provocative discussion questions, provides an excellent five-lesson Lenten study for personal enrichment, for use by small groups and classes, and for sermon preparation by teachers and preachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has never been easy to preach about the cross and resurrection of Jesus, but difficulties today are particularly challenging. Hearers ask tough questions of the church and the Christian faith, and they are not satisfied by formulaic answers. People are often suspicious of doctrine and are attracted to a broad but vague or pluralistic spirituality rather than the classical claims of Christianity. In this climate, preachers often see preaching on the central events of the Christian story, the crucifixion and resurrection, as more of a problem than a possibility, more of a burden than a joy. They wonder not only how to preach the "old, old story" of cross and resurrection but whether they should preach these themes at all. This book addresses these concerns and shows preachers how to preach the cross and resurrection in fresh, culturally relevant ways that deepen Christian discipleship. Each chapter shows the relevance of preaching the cross for addressing a particular congregational concern. What has ironically become a stumbling block in the pulpit, the stone that preachers often reject--preaching on the cross and resurrection of Jesus--can serve as the cornerstone for building up the congregation for discipleship in our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether or not they follow him, most people who know of Jesus believe he was a highly ethical person and profound teacher who challenged the powers that be and died an unjust death. But was that all? Did his life end with his death like every other normal human being? Or as the first-century documents called the gospels assert, was Jesus raised physically from the dead? Did he come back to life to walk and talk and eat and show his scars? Did his disciples get it right? Is death not the end of the road? This book presents key lines of historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. At its heart, it is the story of the resurrection witnesses. Witness reports, their backstories, and accounts of the way they lived their lives going forward allow the reader to evaluate their character and credibility. Remarkable archaeological discoveries and secular historical figures enter the picture when they cross paths with the witnesses. The resurrection of Jesus is controversial, so alternative theories that deny it ever happened get evaluated as well. Reading this book puts you on a journey to understand what really happened in the earthly life of Jesus, which just may be the most important journey anyone can take.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard H. Bliese draws on historic architecture of eight-sided churches to call attention to an important but often overlooked emphasis on the eighth day of creation. Early Christians were focused on God's new creation that began in Christ's resurrection on Sunday, the first day of the week. But these Christians understood resurrection as the continuation of God's creative and redemptive activity. So the first day of the week became the eighth day of creation, and therefore the day of resurrection work and time to join with Christ in transforming the world. Christian disciples do this work by living out their baptismal vocations, especially in their daily work and through their ethical economic choices. The author turns to Martin Luther and the Reformation to outline an evangelical spirituality that invested in people and their vocations as worker-priests. Daily life, work, and family were underscored as the place where discipleship came alive. Bliese describes this as an architectural "design" for faithful living. He further draws on parts of Luther's Small Catechism (Ten Commandments, Apostles' Creed, and Lord's Prayer) as keys to this evangelical design. Five additional architectural designs for eighth-day disciples are included. The final chapter describes how eighth-day disciples are called to live by faith in freedom and responsibility. Making disciples today needs to revolve around a gospel story that links one's personal faith with one's work and economic life. Such faith gives us ears to hear God's unfolding drama and eyes to see the needs of the neighbor. The book includes a study guide for personal reflection and group conversation.

Book excerpt: Engaging and anecdotal in style, Watching, Waiting, Walking is structured around three key moments in the transformation of one of Jesus' closest friends: St Peter. In the garden of Gethsemane, Peter is told to 'watch' his life. Then, along with the other disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration, he is told to 'wait' for the Holy Spirit. And in Jerusalem, following Pentecost, he 'walks' out to address the crowd, and subsequently heals a crippled man who begins to walk himself. Andy Rider believes that reflecting on this pattern of watching, waiting and walking can not only help to shape our prayers on a daily basis, but also to deepen our ability to perceive where we are in the cycle of discipleship. And given the author's honesty about his own times of struggle and reassurance, this warm-hearted volume cannot fail to encourage us - whatever our circumstances - to become more open to the work of God's transforming spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilgrim is a major new teaching and discipleship resource from the Church of England. It will help enquirers and new Christians explore what it means to travel through life with Jesus Christ. A Christian course for the twenty-first century, Pilgrim offers an approach of participation, not persuasion. Enquirers are encouraged to practice the ancient disciplines of biblical reflection and prayer, exploring key texts that have helped people since the earliest days of the Christian faith. Believing that the Christian faith is primarily about relationship, Pilgrim aims to lay a foundation for a lifetime of learning more about God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ and what it means to be his disciple. Assuming little or no knowledge of the Christian faith, Pilgrim can be used at any point on the journey of discipleship and by every tradition in the Church of England. Pilgrim is made up of two parts: Follow and Grow. Each consists of four short courses and a leaders’ guide. Follow introduces the Christian faith for complete beginners, while Grow aims to develop a deeper level of discipleship in those who have turned to Christ. Each short course contains six-sessions, supported by online audio-visual resources. All sessions combine a simple framework prayer, reflection on the Bible in the lectio divina style, an article by a modern writer, and time for questions and reflection. This first book in the Follow Stage, Turning to Christ, explores the questions candidates are asked when they decide to become followers of Jesus.

This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of the Bible are generally comfortable with their understanding of the command “make disciples” (Matt 28:19). Indeed, most of them would argue that the Gospel writer, Matthew, spells out very clearly the meaning of the term in the Great Commission (Matt 28:16–20) by utilizing three key words, viz., “go[ing],” “baptizing,” and “teaching.” This point of view is the result of centuries of scholarly opinion that has looked primarily, if not solely, to these three adjacent participles of “make disciples” (Matt 28:19), and not to the entire Gospel of Matthew, for the meaning of the command. This book does not suggest that “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching” are not to be considered in determining the essence of Christian disciple-making. Rather, it contends that the three terms should not be our only source of meaning. This problem is tackled herein by demonstrating that Matthew establishes a framework within the Great Commission itself that points to a fuller meaning of “make disciples” in the broader context of his Gospel, and that the Gospel writer expects his reader to draw on his entire Gospel to grasp the full meaning of this important command.
