Book excerpt: Rabbi Michael Leo Samuel has once again made a significant contribution to Jewish scholarship entitled “The Unknown English Torah Commentator: Marcus M. Kalisch on Genesis 1-22.” This work promises to be a new trailblazing series introducing readers to the thinking and teachings of Marcus Kalisch (1828-1885). Kalisch integrated the best of Judaic scholarship with the ideas of philosophy, anthropology, comparative literature, linguistics, and classical literature is unique. People of all faith and religious traditions will enjoy reading about Kalisch’s novel interpretations of the Bible’s most beloved tales. Kalisch always sought to make the ethical lessons of the Pentateuch meaningful for the average reader, rabbi, or scholar. The graphical illustrations add an artistic flare to the commentary, captivating the writer’s heart and imagination. ~Rabbi Dr. Israel Drazin, Onkelos on the Torah: Understanding the Biblical Text Marcus Kalisch wrote one of the first extensive commentaries on the Torah to have been written in English. Kalisch ranks as one of the most extraordinary exegetes who ever lived. His expansive command of rabbinical, theological, linguistic, classical, and historical sources was nothing less than kaleidoscopic. Despite having composed his outstanding work over 175 years ago, his thoughts and inspirational content can deeply enrich any biblical student, scholar, or teacher. Kalisch possessed a complete mastery of ancient Jewish texts and could cite the writings of Euripides as easily as he could quote the Talmud. Rabbi Michael Leo Samuel has done a stellar job distilling the best of Kalisch’s sophisticated thought. Kalisch’s ideas deserve to be disseminated to our era and beyond. ~Rabbi Dr. Bernhard Rosenberg, Echoes of the Holocaust: Survivors and Their Children and Grandchildren Speak Out Rabbi Michael Leo Samuel is the son of a Holocaust survivor. He holds two rabbinic ordinations from the Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch Yeshiva of 770 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn and holds a D. Min. degree from the San Francisco Theological Seminary. He is an avid student of the Greek classics, Biblical and Talmudic scholarship, Jungian Psychology, Western Medieval Theology, Modern Philosophy, and 20th century psychology. He is the author of The Lord Is My Shepherd: The Theology of the Caring God (1996), Birth and Rebirth Through Genesis (2010), A Shepherd’s Song: Psalm 23 and the Shepherd Metaphor In Jewish Thought (2014), Rediscovering Philo of Alexandria: A First Century Jewish Commentator (Volumes, 1-5), (2014-2018), Maimonides’ Hidden Torah Commentary (Volumes 1-5) and Gentle Judaic Wisdom for a Troubled World (2019).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katie J. Woolstenhulme considers the pertinent questions: Who were 'the matriarchs', and what did the rabbis think about them? Whilst scholarship on the role of women in the Bible and Rabbinic Judaism has increased, the authoritative group of women known as 'the matriarchs' has been neglected. This volume consequently focuses on the role and status of the biblical matriarchs in Genesis Rabbah, the fifth century CE rabbinic commentary on Genesis. Woolstenhulme begins by discussing the nature of midrash and introducing Genesis Rabbah; before exploring the term 'the matriarchs' and its development through early exegetical literature, culminating in the emergence of two definitions of the term in Genesis Rabbah – 'the matriarchs' as the legitimate wives of Israel's patriarchs, and 'the matriarchs' as a reference to Jacob's four wives, who bore Israel's tribal ancestors. She then moves to discuss 'the matriarchal cycle' in Genesis Rabbah with its three stages of barrenness; motherhood; and succession. Finally, Woolstenhulme considers Genesis Rabbah's portrayal of the matriarchs as representatives of the female sex, exploring positive and negative rabbinic attitudes towards women with a focus on piety, prayer, praise, beauty and sexuality, and the matriarchs' exemplification of stereotypical, negative female traits. This volume concludes that for the ancient rabbis, the matriarchs were the historical mothers of Israel, bearing covenant sons, but also the present mothers of Israel, continuing to influence Jewish identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intersex is an umbrella term for many different conditions that cause ambiguous sexual biology. Intersex people are “in between,” neither clearly male nor clearly female. Intersex has been largely hidden through surgery and secrecy, but is now coming out into the open. Many intersex people have experienced physical, psychological, and relational pain because of the shame attached to their bodily difference. The existence of people with unusual sexual biology presents a challenge to the Christian ideal of humanity as male and female. How can evangelical Christians rightly respond to this phenomenon? Intersex in Christ provides a balance of grace and truth, upholding male and female as God’s created intent, while insisting that there is a positive place in the kingdom of God and the world for people with unusual sexual biology. Intersex people are created in the image of God, because of the love of God. Jesus accepts, loves, and dignifies intersex people. The gospel of Jesus Christ is good news for all people, however sexed. An evangelical response to intersex will therefore be one of acceptance, love, justice, and inclusion. Intersex in Christ will help both intersex Christians and the church to understand intersex through the lens of Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a broad consensus among biblical scholars that creation ex nihilo (from nothing) is a late Hellenistic concept with little inherent connection to Genesis 1 and other biblical creation texts. In this book, Nathan J. Chambers forces us to reconsider the question, arguing in favor of reading this chapter of the Bible in terms of ex nihilo creation and demonstrating that there is a sound basis for the early Christian development of the doctrine. Drawing on the theology of Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas, Chambers considers what the ex nihilo doctrine means and does in classical Christian dogma. He examines ancient Near Eastern cosmological texts that provide a potential context for reading Genesis 1. Recognizing the distance between the possible historical and theological frameworks for interpreting the text, he illuminates how this doctrine developed within early Christian thought as a consequence of the church’s commitment to reading Genesis 1 as part of Christian Scripture. Through original close readings of the chapter that engage critically with the work of Jon Levenson, Hermann Gunkel, and Brevard Childs, Chambers demonstrates that, far from precluding interpretive possibilities, reading Genesis 1 in terms of creation from nothing opens up a variety of interpretive avenues that have largely been overlooked in contemporary biblical scholarship. Timely and innovative, this book makes the case for a new (or recovered) framework for reading Genesis 1 that will appeal to biblical studies scholars and seminarians.

In Lies Women Believe, bestselling author Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth exposes those areas of deception most commonly believed by Christian women—lies about God, sin, priorities, marriage and family, emotions, and more. She then sheds light on how we can be delivered from bondage and set free to walk in God's grace, forgiveness, and abundant life. "Many women live under a cloud of personal guilt and condemnation," says DeMoss. "Many are in bondage to their past. Others are gripped by fear of rejection and a longing for approval. Still others are emotional prisoners." Satan is the master deceiver and his lies are endless. And the lies Christian women believe are at the root of most of their struggles. In the Lies Women Believe Companion Guide, DeMoss divides the study into ten sessions for individuals or small groups. Each chapter includes the following features: In a Nutshell: Gives you an overview of the chapter to be studied from Lies Women Believe and reminds you of the lies discussed within that chapter. Exploring the Truth: Offers a daily personal study for you to complete during the course of the week between your small group meetings. Each day's study includes a few pages to read from Lies Women Believe and then questions to answer under the subtitles "Realize," "Reflect," and "Respond." Walking Together in the Truth: Provides questions to be discussed when your small group meets. Now there is a resource that will help you go deeper with the truths from DeMoss's best-selling book Lies Women Believe. These penetrating questions will make you and your friends think and wrestle with the Truth as you search the Bible for answers to tough issues. Truth is not just something to know but something to live out in the laboratory of life as you apply the Word to real-life situations. The Companion Guide for Lies Women Believe is ideal for small groups, Bible Studies, and Sunday school classes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be his fourth publication to the Christendom, this book addresses the individual woman, a topic badly needed to be addressed. No one has taken the time to explore the various roles of a woman as she moves up in God’s hierarchy. But this book begins the trend to look at that women failures are due to her roles. The failure to apply the roles to one’s life will cause a breakdown in the individual, her marriage, her family, and her church. All four of these entities are connected by the common thread—role. We talk about the roles of actors and actresses but never about the roles of a woman that God had assigned her. If women will do the basic roles of a woman, our homes, employments, societies, and churches would be a better place fostering love, faith, and hope. Moreover, this book on the roles of a woman precedes his next book, The Roles of the Child. The woman’s and the child’s roles are meaningless if the man’s roles are not in place. The author hopes to share with you the roles he and his wife have found to be very beneficial and a must in all men’s and women’s lives.
