Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional public policy toward the family, the authors of this book argue, has produced an array of fragmented mechanical programs in response to specific, perceived "dysfunctions" in family performance. Policy has been biased by a restrictive perception that families unlike the nuclear, two-parent household are either ailing or aberrant. In response to these observations, the authors portray the family as a natural, ongoing, and dynamically adaptive element of Western civilization. They suggest that legislators and policy analysts should view the household as a tangible social and economic asset and an appropriate technology with which a number of tasks (such as child care, education, health, disability and unemployment insurance, social security, and the welfare of the aged) now performed by more complex and costly formal institutions may be better accomplished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of Black families have had a `problem focus', offering a narrow view of important issues such as out-of-wedlock births, single-parent families and childhood poverty. Family Life in Black America moves away from this negative perspective and instead deals with a wide range of issues including sexuality, procreation, infancy, adulthood, adolescence, cohabitation, parenting, grandparenting and ageing. A fresh aspect of this book is the amount of diversity it reveals within black families and the forces that shape, limit and enhance them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Policy and the American Safety Net shows how families adapt to economic and demographic change. Government programs provide a safety net against the new risks of modern life. Family policy includes any public program that helps families perform their four universal obligations of caregiving, income provision, shelter, and transmission of citizenship. In America, this means that child care, health care, Social Security, unemployment insurance, housing, the quality of neighborhood schools, and anti-discrimination and immigration measures are all key elements of a de facto family policy. Yet many students and citizens are unaware of the history and importance of these programs. This book argues that family policy is as important as economic and defense policy to the future of the nation, a message that is relevant to students in the social sciences, social policy, and social work as well as to the public at large. .

Book excerpt: Taylor looks behind the Civil War metaphor of "brother against brother" to the real experiences of families, particularly in border states, whose households were split by divided loyalties. She studies letters and diaries to understand how families coped with division between husbands and wives, fathers and sons, and she traces the adoption of the image of the "house divided" in newspapers, government documents, and popular fiction to describe the divided nation. Book excerpt: Several years ago, an anonymous donor gave a generous gift to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University School of Medicine. The donor suggested that the gift be used to support a conference on the current dilem mas of the American family and to publish its proceedings. The current chairman of the department, Jerry Wiener, formulated the initial plans for the conference with Leon Yochelson, who had been chairman at the time the gift was made. Dr. Yochelson is now Chairman of the Board of the Psychiatric Institute of the District of Columbia. These initial discussions led to a significant and sus tained collaboration between the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington and the Psychiatric In stitute in planning the conference and the present volume. A committee was established to plan the conference. It con sisted of Peter Steinglass, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and George Cohn, Professor of Child Health and Development, both of George Washington, and Margaret Garrett, a member of the psychiatric staff at the Psychiatric Institute. The committee was jointly chaired by the editors of this volume. The committee re ceived indispensable assistance from members of the administra tive staff of the Psychiatric Institute: Al Bruce, Carol Klein, and Miriam Mathura. Margaret Schnellinger of the Center for Family Research, George Washington University, was also very helpful in all phases of planning the conference.

This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the existence of statistics and numerical data on various aspects of African American life, including housing, earnings, assets, unemployment, household violence, teen pregnancy and encounters with the criminal justice system, social science literature on how racism affects the everyday interactions of African American families is limited. How does racism come home to and affect African American families? If a father in an African American family is denied employment on the basis of his race or a wife is demeaned at work by racist slurs, how is their family life affected? Given the lack of social science literature responding to these questions, this volume turns to an alternative source in order to address them: literature. Engaging with novels written by African American authors, it explores their rich depictions of African American family life, showing how these can contribute to our sociological knowledge and making the case for the novel as an object and source of social research. As such, it will appeal to scholars and students of the sociology of the family, race and ethnicity, cultural studies and literature.
