Many people todayhave little sense of how their lives have benefited fromChristianity’s influence, often viewing the church withhostility or resentment. How Christianity Changed the World is a topicallyarranged Christian history for Christians and non-Christians. Grounded in solid research and written in apopular style, this book is both a helpful apologetic toolin talking with unbelievers and a source of evidence forwhy Christianity deserves credit for many of thehumane, social, scientific, and cultural advances in theWestern world in the last two thousand years.Photographs, timelines, and charts enhance eachchapter. This edition features questions for reflection anddiscussion for each chapter.

Schmidt for permission to trans late his book into English, Dr. Dale for his Preliminary Essay, and J. L. Paton, Esq., for assistance with the classical notes. The completeness with which M. Schmidt gives the authorities upon which his statements rest, adds greatly to the value of his book. Born into a world in which the institutions are at least coloured by Christianity, we can hardly realize either what they have been without it, or to what they may yet rise with a fuller appreciation of its principles and Spirit. This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1930, The Social Achievements of the Christian Church, was one of the first modern surveys of Christian social and ethical influence from the time of Christ until the 20th century. In it Edmund Oliver argues that the Christian church-despite numerous and admitted errors in its attempt to influence surrounding culture-has nonetheless rendered outstanding social service to the world. Examples of the church's external influence can be seen in the establishment of hospitals, asylums, and orphanages; in preservation of learning through the formation of universities; in caring for the needy; and in the philosophical and ethical influence that underpins much of legal and political thought in Western culture. Edmund H. Oliver (1882-1935) taught history and economics before becoming the principal of St. Andrew's College in Saskatoon, and eventually the fourth moderator of the United Church of Canada. During the World War I he served as chaplain to the 196th Battalion and the Canadian Training School and Trench Warfare School at Benhill-on-Sea, England. He also launched the University of Vimy Ridge while in England.

This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focussing on three first- and early-second-century documents (the Shepherd of Hermas, 1 Clement and the Ignatian epistles), this work contributes to a growing body of literature concerned with the social setting of early Christianity. Maier argues that the development of structures of leadership in the early Christian church is best accounted for by reference to the hospitality, patronage, and leadership of wealthy hosts who invited local Christian groups to meet in their homes. Sociological models and types are employed to analyze the tensions that arose from excesses of patronage and leadership by the well-to-do. Recognizing the socio-economic setting of these conflicts corrects the interpretation of early Christian conflicts over the ministry as purely theological and doctrinali.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is increasingly seen as a dangerous source of violence in the world, breeding a fear of faith in a very vocal group of critics. Most Christians are blissfully unaware of the litany of allegations being brought against religion, including that it is the cause of intolerance, imperialism, irrationality, bigotry, and war, to name a few. But ignorance is not the answer. In Why People Don't Believe, Paul Chamberlain strives to represent the concerns and challenges raised against religious faith, particularly those raised against Christianity, to help readers understand them. He then thoughtfully responds to these criticisms, honestly evaluating whether they have merit. Lastly, he outlines the many good and humane contributions Christianity has made to the world throughout the past 2,000 years. Anyone who is troubled by today's headlines involving religious violence or who wants to be able to respond intelligently to critics will find Why People Don't Believe a welcome, hopeful book.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the Morgan Lectures delivered at Auburn Theological Seminary in New York in October 1897. The advances in the history of Christianity have come about not so much from the discovery of new materials--though of these also unremitting research has yielded an abundant supply--as from the new historical temper in which scholars have approached their task; from the fresh power acquired of reading aright the meaning of the data already possessed, and of setting them in new lights and relations; from increased skill in coligating them, and in interpreting the significance of unnoticed details in their bearing on an entire situation--in which lies so much of the higher art of the historian. Just as the naturalist is reputed to be able from a single bone to reconstruct the form of some creature of the past, so our modern scholars aim at showing that the minutest fact is not isolated, but stands in organic relation with the all-pervading life of the time; and from comparison of the facts they seek to re-create for us a picture whose justification is its verisimilitude, and its power of interpreting the sum-total of the phenomena. --from Lecture One

Book excerpt: "Do we properly understand what it is that the Church should be seeking to accomplish on earth in heaven's name'" This crucial question, at the heart of Philip Blair's thought-provoking and challenging book, is one that is seldom confronted by those vast numbers of professing Christians who are overly preoccupied by the world and its affairs. He argues that the Church was appointed to be the single custodian and teacher of a new and distinctive revelation about man's potential in Christ, and that it is this task which she is compromising, and even at times abandoning, by entering the political arena. In Part I of this book, Dr Blair establishes his argument by tracing the Church's history over nearly 2,000 years, illustrating her many oscillations between faithfulness and apostasy, and in Part II looks at Christian origins in order to identify the real nature of the Church and her Gospel. Scholarly, well-researched, cogently argued and logically developed, while Dr Blair's analysis may appear at some points highly controversial, this merely indicates how timely is his attempt to redress what has become a serious imbalance in much modern Christian thought.
