He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming. There were other things in the stocking, nuts and oranges and a toy engine, and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse, but the Rabbit was quite the best of all. For at least two hours the Boy loved him, and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner, and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels, and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten.

Book excerpt: Classic Children's Books The Velveteen Rabbit Or How Toys Become Real by Margery Williams The Velveteen Rabbit (or How Toys Become Real) is a children's book written by Margery Williams (also known as Margery Williams Bianco) and illustrated by William Nicholson. It chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit and his desire to become real, through the love of his owner. The book was first published in 1922 and has been republished many times since. A stuffed rabbit sewn from velveteen is given as a Christmas present to a small boy. The boy plays with his other new presents and forgets the velveteen rabbit for a time. These presents are modern and mechanical, and they snub the old-fashioned velveteen rabbit. The wisest and oldest toy in the nursery, the Skin Horse, who was owned by the boy's uncle, tells the rabbit about toys magically becoming Real due to love from children. The rabbit is awed by this idea; however, his chances of achieving this wish are slight. One night, the boy's Nana gives the rabbit to the boy to sleep with, in place of a lost toy. The rabbit becomes the boy's favourite toy, enjoying picnics with him in the spring; and the boy regards the rabbit as 'REAL'. Time passes, and the rabbit becomes shabbier but happy. He meets some real rabbits in the summer, and they learn that he cannot hop as they do and say that he is not real.

Book excerpt: Beautiful classical music and simple sound effects help tell the well-known story of “The Velveteen Rabbit.” This favorite children’s classic tale is about a young boy that receives a stuffed, velveteen rabbit as a Christmas present. The Boy loves the rabbit, but after unwrapping the other presents, forgets about the Rabbit completely. The old, wise Skin Horse comforts the Rabbit by telling him not to worry, because the fancier toys will never become “Real.” The Skin Horse explains that “Real,” only happens when a child loves something for a very long, long time. One night, the Boy’s Nanny reaches into the toy cupboard and finds the Rabbit. She gives the Boy the Velveteen Rabbit to sleep with. That night, and for many nights after, the Velveteen Rabbit slept in the Boy’s bed. The Boy talked to the Velveteen Rabbit and they played games together. Find out what happens when the Boy becomes very ill and the doctor suggests that the Rabbit be thrown into the trash to be burned the next day. Will the Velveteen Rabbit ever become “Real?”A positive ending adds interest to this adorable story and encourages a lifelong love for reading.
